Friday night is a sacred night at our house.
The lights are dimmed.
A folding table emerges in the living room covered in goodies like popcorn, pizza, and snacks.
My wild hooligans all pile on the couch and argue over what movie to watch which normally requires various deal breakers like rolling dice, picking names out of a hat or the dreaded Rock Paper Scissors.
Unless, Mom and Dad get involved and choose for them.
Today was a good day when I saw that How to Train Your Dragon was available on Netflix! That means I get to choose the movie, but that there is a theme to go with it. No arguments about how many times we have seen the movie, if it’s for babies, and nothing but fun. That is a successful Friday evening in my book.
How to Train Your Dragon!
The plan
I’m not gonna lie, when I searched Pinterest for ideas for How to Train Your Dragon food, I was inundated with a million ideas and I knew that there would be no way for us to execute a good plan and be in bed at our normal time. I love the inspiration, but that is a lot for a full house and limited time to enjoy.
We need to have something easy to execute, fun to do, but doesn’t take a lot of time. My little artists love to decorate a sweet treat, so I need to make sure I get the canvas right.
Our go to canvases for edible art are graham crackers or rice cakes!
The plan for tonight-
- Decorated sheep toss rice cakes covered with billions of marshmallows and silly faces!
- Decorated dragon shields with all the goodies I can find
Other options-
If we had time and didn’t have tons of Valentine’s parties today, I would have opted for-
- Decorated personal pizzas (a FAN FAVORITE with my kiddos who all have different tastes, because putting pickles on a pizza is weird but beloved by one kid in the house)
- Cupcakes, but life is too short to spend that much time in the kitchen lol
The Shopping List
I swear you can make anything an art canvas if you are creative enough.
For our sheep, we will get-
- Rice cakes (ANY will work but my kids love Chocolate or Caramel Apple)
- Mini-marshmallows for sheep fluff
- Peanut butter so the marshmallows have something to stick to
- Chocolate for feet and arms
- Oreos for the face
For our shields
- Rice cakes Round 2
- Any treats we can find in the aisle at Dollar General that my kids resonate with! I am confident there will be gummy figures, twizzlers for lines, and all those special treats what we can justify.
- The kids also love fruit, so we will make sure to add that as well!

I love our little whimsical traditions
I know that the kids will not always be excited for Friday nights with the family, but I hope that we can make the most of our time together while they are still young and play as much as we can! When I get nostalgic and start looking at how much they grow, my husband reminds me that if we continue these fun little traditions, we might be able to make our home the Friday night movie hangout where kids can come over for pizza, a movie, and fellowship…and that sounds magical.
